StormOS is the first desktop distribution based on the Nexenta Core Platform which combines the power of the Solaris kernel with the Ubuntu user-land and package management system. The project aims to create a lightweight OS that can scale from netbook to workstation including all the essentials out of the box.
Included software:
- Polished Xfce 4.6 Desktop enviroment
- Office suite (Abiword, Gnumeric spreadsheet and Evince PDF reader)
- Gimp - GNU Image Manipulation Program
- Rhythmbox Music Player with support for iPod + iTunes sharing and Last.fm
- Ristretto image viewer
- Fast and customizable Firefox 3 web browser
- Easy package management with Synaptic Package Manager and gdebi
- Transmission bittorrent client
- Xchat IRC client and Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger
Other features:
- No need to deal with the flakey Pulseaudio sound system.
- No slow and memory hungry IPS (Image Packaging System); we use APT.
- Stable ABI for kernel modules (drivers).
- ZFS (Zetabyte File System) with snapshots, compression and deduplication.
The first release is called "Hardy Hail" or just "Hail" for short, which we hope to release soon. Beta versions are available now from the download page.
