StormOS vs Opensolaris

Tagged:

Hello,

I'm using Opensolaris in my Laptop and I would like to work with StormOS, my question is this, are the packages used in StormOS compatible with the one in Opensolaris? may I install a package from Solaris in StormOS?

Regards,

Joao

I'm hoping that this package will provide me with a solution I have been searching for quite a while. I use a 3d cad package called pro engineer which is not going to continue support for linux in version 4 but they will for solaris. Will I be able to run the linux v3 of pro engineer in storm and or the solaris version.
Does storm have all of the nice storage features of solais, zfs. timeline restore etc.

Yes and No.

StormOS (and Nexenta) can use alien to install OpenSolaris packages, but the implementation is a bit buggy. I'm currently trying to hack it to work well enough with VirtualBox Guest Additions.

What package did you have in mind?

Hi,

Will ubuntu eye candy work, compiz etc.
I realise I have asked a lot in this mail but any info appreciated. I am downloading a live cd right now to try it on my dell m90.
Thanks for your help

I would think you could use both the Linux and Solaris version, see here for setting up Ubuntu in a Brandz Zone: http://blogs.sun.com/gravax/entry/skype_1_4_on_solaris. The only way to know for sure is to try it.

StormOS has ZFS, but not the timeline (yet), when I backport GNOME from Jaunty I will apply the patches for it. Compiz also needs backporting.

The next StormOS will be very different from beta 2, so get prepared for awesomeness. This will also be the last 'big' change to StormOS before the first non-beta release.

Thanks or the Reply,

I'll keep you posted.
